Queston #6454Note

  • Schizencephaly is also known as “cleft brain” which means that there is a cleft of brain matter. Opened-lipped (type 2) schizencephaly has communication between the ventricular system and the subarachnoid CSF space while closed-lipped (type 1) schizencephaly does not. The image provided is an example of type 2 schizencephaly.
  • Schizencephaly can appear similar to a porencephalic cyst, except a porencephalic cyst (caused by an intrauterine insult from vascular or infectious cause) is not lined by grey matter cortex, while the tract in schizencephaly is indeed lined by a grey matter cortex. Note the grey matter cortex is around the entire lesion in this image.
