HSV encephalitis has been shown to trigger NMAD encephalitis. A prospective study showed 27% of patients developing NMDAR autoimmune encephalitis after HSV encephalitis. Patients usually this manifest within a few months after the initial infection. Recurrence of HSV encephalitis can occur, but orofacial dyskinesias are very uncommon with HSV encephalitis and is most suggestive of autoimmune encephalitis.
