Risk factors for carotid dissection include a history of neck trauma, chiropractic neck manipulation/high-velocity neck injury, or connective tissue disease (fibromuscular dysplasia, Marfan syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome). The mechanism of ischemic stroke in these individuals is a vessel to vessel embolic phenomenon, not a cardioembolic phenomenon.
