Cheyne-Stokes breathing is described as an alternating pattern of crescendo and decrescendo respirations followed by periods of apnea 
– can be seen secondary to heart failure 
– can be seen with lesions to the midbrain, thalami, or bilateral cerebrum 

Ataxic breathing pattern can be seen in medullary lesions
