Apneustic breathing an abnormal breathing pattern characterized by regular deep inspirations, an inspiratory pause, and inadequate expiration 
– this can be seen by an injury to the pons 


Cheyne-Stokes breathing is described as an alternating pattern of crescendo and decrescendo respirations followed by periods of apnea 
– can be seen secondary to heart failure 
– can be seen with lesions to the midbrain, thalami, or bilateral cerebrum 

Ataxic breathing pattern can be seen in medullary lesions
