– this is an abnormal communication between the carotid artery and cavernous sinus; often seen secondary to trauma 
– those with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and fibromuscular dysplasia are at risk for spontaneous CCF 
– vessel imaging can show enlarged draining veins from the eye, particularly the superior ophthalmic vein
