Decorticate posturing typically involves lesions above the red nucleus, which sits at the intercollicular line in the mibrain 

Lesions in the thalamus, internal capsule, and cerebrum can lead to decorticate posturing 

 

Decerebrate posturing can be seen secondary to a CNS lesion at or below (caudal to) the red nucleus
