Asian descent have a relatively high frequency of the HLA-B1502 allele. The presence of this allele carries a high risk of Stevens-Johnson syndrome if carbamazepine is initiated. It is recommended that genetic testing for HLA-B polymorphisms should be completed prior to initiating carbamazepine in this population
