Mexiletine has been shown to reduce grip relaxation time in patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1). Other sodium channel blockers (phenytoin, carbamazepine) and tricyclic antidepressants can also be used to treat myotonia. Thiazides can be effective in managing patients with hyperkalemic periodic paralysis
